Thursday: Bailee went to school in the morning, we came home for lunch and a little playing, then off to therapy for speech and OT. She did really good today. When we arrived the first thing she said to the therapist was "I want to eat!" It's rare Bailee ever tells us she is hungry, but she was clear on the fact that she wanted to eat, despite just having lunch an hour ago.
When Bailee said she was hungry, she meant it. But was it food that she was really hungry for? Yes, she enjoyed the cookies and chips as they touched her tastes buds in her little mouth. But I think she was more "hungry" for the interaction and the experience of getting to work on self-feeding with her therapists. When Bailee gets it right and everyone cheers her on, she lights up, her soul shines through from the inside out and she radiates with joy. This is what she is really hungry for.
So, ask yourself the next time you are hungry "What is it I am really "hungry" for"? Is your food feeding your need, or is your need more than just a sensation in the stomach giving you an urge to eat? Are you feeding yourself nourishment for your body or your soul?
